STARBRIGHT World

The Family Resource Center offers the STARBRIGHT World program to our hospitalized
patients and their siblings. STARBRIGHT World is a private, interactive computer network
specially designed for hospitalized children and teenagers. STARBRIGHT World is a place like
no other - where hospitalized kids across the nation can interact within a community of peers,
helping each other cope with the day to day realities of life with illness.

Using STARBRIGHT World, kids share what procedures are really like, and what can make
them more tolerable. What makes your room feel more like home, and how to get along with
roomates. They discuss interacting with healthcare professionals and understanding the meaning
behind medical terminology. They take advice on going back to school after chemotherapy or
surgery. And communication is just the beginning of STARBRIGHT World.

Kids learn about illnesses, procedures and coping and learn the definitions to difficult terms.
They engage in single and multi-user activities that canhelp distract them from a painful
procedure, or simply turn what was an afternoon of TV into hours of high speed
friendship-building, and so much more.

STARBRIGHT World activities promote a spirit of play, foster a sense of accomplishment,
and provide an outlet for creative expression. Chat rooms and bulletin boards encourage kids
to speak out on a variety of topics, while video conferencing lets users thousands of miles apart
meet face to face. These features can reduce feelings of loneliness, particularly for isolated children,
as well as foster a sense of community amongst children facing similar challenges. Selected web
sites and STARBRIGHT-developed healthcare programs open a world of knowledge and
adventure, and can help keep hospitalized children up to date on current trends and encourage
relationships between peers.

STARBRIGHT World is a private and secure network; all Internet content remains secure from
public access through a variety of security measures, ensuring children's privacy regardless of location.

For information and program hours and volunteering opportunities, contact our STARBRIGHT World

We are located in The W. O. Frohring Family Resource Center Annex, Room 1612, first floor
of the Horvitz Tower in Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

What is Starbright?

Here is a brief glimpse of what our patients see on the STARBRIGHT World network. . .

STARBRIGHT World is a computer
that allows you to meet, see and talk
to kids in other hospitals across the country,
playgames, surf web sites, and
learn new things.

Starbright - Explore

books...new movies, celebrities, sports, musicians/bands
and things you might see or experience in the hospital.

This is where you can search for friends by what
you enter into the computer. For example: type
14 years olds who like soccer and live in California,
then click on Search and a list of all 14 year olds who
live in California and like soccer will appear. It's as easy as that!
